Springing Forward Into Celebration

Spring is nature's way of saying, 'Let's party!'

Spring is the best season, and I will have none of your rabble rousing about "opinions" vs. "fact". It's simply the truth. Spring is full of flowers, warming weather, the freedom from boots, and my birthday. Spring is truly the best season.

But you're not here to hear me talk about those boring things, you want to know about books. Well fear not, because spring is also a great season for books. Full of great awards like our very own SEUSS Awards, birthdays celebrated by the likes of Ezra Jack Keats, Lois Lowry, and Shakespeare. Most importantly, spring is full of celebrations of the written word and the infrastructure in place to share it. Let me briefly acquaint you with some of the best, or my favorite, springtime celebrations of books and those who love them.

March 5th - World Read Aloud Day: Straight from the source, WRAD "is about taking action to show the world that the right to read and write belongs to all people". I can't say that there is any literary goal more noble. Last year they had over a million participants and reached over 65 countries. With your help, let's try and double that.

April - School Library Month: Started in 1985, School Library Month is an opportunity to appreciate our school librarians and their programs. It is also an opportunity for those same librarians to throw their activity schedule into top gear and help remind both the schools and the community just how important a school library is to the education of the students.

April 12 - National Drop Everything And Read day (D.E.A.R ): Probably my favorite celebration of reading as a child D.E.A.R is nothing but excitement on all sides. Celebrated by not only book readers but even characters within those books D.E.A.R is truly an all-inclusive party. Getting involved as an individual is as simple as reading to yourself, to children, to anyone. If you're a school or organization, hosting an event is a wonderful way to give back and emphasize the importance of reading and expanding a child's imagination.

May 12-18 -  Children's Book Week: Last but not least, Children's Book Week is the longest-running national literacy initiative in the country. 2014 marks the 95th CBW and this year there will be official events in over 60 cities across the country (plus innumerable local events), and yet in all that time  and distance covered the message has stayed the same: “A great nation is a reading nation.”

We at Scarletta are excited to play our part in all of these things, and with the 2014 Spring lineup being just about as strong as it gets, we're excited to know that many of you will join us.
